Preliminary Education Program 2010-2011
ABC-3 - @ Lincoln Tech
ABC-3 - @ Lincoln Tech
ABC-3 - @ Lincoln Tech
Vessel Examiner Training Course – (TBD)
GPS Course – (TBD) This is a greatly expanded version of the GPS Seminar offered by USPS National Education Department
Seamanship – (TBD); Course Chair – Donald Young
Piloting – (TBD); Course Chair – Harold Oslick
In this chapter we will cover basic concepts in coastal and inland navigation, the use of piloting skills to get the most from your GPS, a quick overview using GPS as your primary position sensor, how to measure latitude and longitude of a point on a chart for entry into your GPS, how to plot a position using the latitude and longitude given by the GPS, and how to plot, measure, and label course lines on a chart.
In Chapter 2 we will cover how to use charts for planning and piloting, including the meaning of chart symbols, effective utilization of the aids to navigation, use of the mariner’s compass and correcting between magnetic and true direction.
Even electronic navigation relies upon the boater’s ability to plan and plot courses on charts. Chapter 3 covers basic plotting techniques, the process of dead reckoning, and how to use bearings. Other positioning techniques are also covered including, ranges and “Seaman’s Eye.” Pre-planning paths on the water and the criteria for a safe course are addressed. Chapter 3 also includes in-class exercises applying the techniques learned.
Chapter 4 will get you started
actually learning how to navigate with electronics, how the charts
relate to the water, use of a compass to navigate, and how to
correct your compass for the effects of the boat. The heart of this
course is a cruise exercise which begins with this chapter and
continues through the remainder of the course.
Chapter 5, taught in two sessions, will teach you how to use a GPS as a navigation tool, what the GPS keyboard functions are, and typical GPS screens. You will learn how to put waypoints into a GPS, how to construct routes, how to check waypoints and routes stored in the GPS, how to activate waypoints for navigation, and what a GPS does when a waypoint is activated. The overall process of navigating with a GPS will be covered, along with how to transfer data from a GPS onto a chart.
Now that you’ve learned how to plot and qualify a course, this chapter will address how to stay on course with a GPS, what to do if you find yourself off course, sequentially navigating waypoints or routes, the “Seaman’s Eye,” and checking the accuracy of a GPS.
Electronics can fail. Even with multiple GPS units, the signal can be lost. Chapter 7 covers how to find your position if the GPS becomes unreliable, using dead reckoning, why you should be tracking your GPS position on a paper chart, finding position using bearings, and navigating manually using dead reckoning.
The course will be held mostly on Wednesday evenings, with exceptions as shown. It will take place at the home of P/D/C Harold Oslick, SN, who is Chairman for the course. We need students and a few more lecturers. To take the course, no prerequisite course is required, but Seamanship is recommended.
If you are interested in taking the course, or in assisting with one or more lectures, please e-mail P/D/C Harold Oslick ASAP. hoslick@verizon.net.
Advanced Piloting – (TBD); Course Chair – (TBD)
Notes: 1. There are exercises associated with each chapter, some of which will be done in class, other of which will be assigned as homework. 2. The final exam is a take home open book exam. Students are expected to work independently on this.
